I just love this. I used to write little poems as a child and occasionally in college. (Your grandfather’s are much better than mine were.) It’s a skill we should all revive.
Thanks, Ed, for posting these on facebook so I could enjoy them! Well done! And how well I remember when he gave me the poem he wrote for me! Glad you unearthed them all!
This just makes me well up, what a beautiful and fitting homage. At a care home I worked at, a lady in my care had so many poems from her childhood, and in her old age used a comedically large magnifying glass for her dimming eyes to see the spider-like chicken scratch poem she was writing about the prairie winter. Such a beautiful image to me! Reading this is so inspiring to keep sharing poetry and written musings with friends now, and hopefully to pass it on for generations to hold and treasure. Thank you very much for sharing something so personal and dear!
A fitting homage to your grandfather--we need more like him (and you), driven to use verse out of simple love for verse.
PS: I'm not sure why, but his bird feeder poem was quite moving to me. I think it's because it brings to mind the love my beloved, deceased father-in-law (as well as my wife, Jennifer) who both love birds; this is what either could have written. Thank you for sharing that!
